WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SWIM MEETS

The most important thing to remember is that swim meets are meant to be enjoyable learning experiences! Your swimmer might win her event or she might come in last; he might turn in his best swim ever or he might violate seven different stroke requirements and get DQ’d. They might dive from the block or they might nervously start in the water from the wall. He might swim halfway down the pool, look around at the crowd, and completely melt down. ONE thing is certain, though: our coaches will praise your child’s courage to compete.

WHAT TO BRING TO SWIM MEETS

  • GOGGLES, SWIM CAP
  • TOWELS
  • SUNSCREEN – Many pools don’t have much shade and you/your swimmer will be out in the sun.
  • WATER BOTTLE – Keep it filled to avoid dehydration.
  • ENTERTAINMENT – Books, crayons/paper, cards, etc., for between events.
  • SHARPIE – To re-write your child’s event numbers on his/her hand; after the meet, fingernail polish remover, suntan lotion, or baby oil will take off the ink.
  • CAMP CHAIRS – Many pools don’t have enough chairs.
  • HEALTHY FOOD – Most venues have concessions, but bring granola bars, fruit, yogurt, bagels, etc. to snack on between races.
  • RAIN GEAR – We pause for storms, but we swim through mere rain … so you may be standing in it.
  • SWIMSUITS  – Never hurts to have a back-up just in case!

HELPFUL THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • Check in with the Volunteer Coordinator when you arrive to confirm your job for the meet (both home and away). Listen for announcements, including timers’ meetings, switching halves, etc.
  • Get a Heat Sheet and highlight your child’s heat/lane/events.
  • Don’t let the kids eat immediately before an event!
